Satellites face changing thermal conditions as they move between sunlight and eclipse and as payload power demands vary. This presentation will explore a passive, adaptive approach to managing these conditions. We will introduce Aetara’s STARC (Space Temperature-Adaptive Radiative Coating), which increases infrared emissivity as it warms and reduces radiative heat loss as it cools. We will discuss the development path from adaptive coatings to integrated radiator systems, including design trade-offs, ground validation priorities, and spacecraft integration considerations. Applications will include satellite buses, payloads, and emerging onboard computing. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of where adaptive thermal surfaces may add value and the steps needed to evaluate their suitability for a mission.
